Capture setup for sharing launch moments: screenshots and clips, ready before day one

Setup · Updated November 2026 · 8 min read

Will GTA VI have a photo mode? Nobody outside Rockstar can honestly answer that yet. The official GTA VI page checked on November 3, 2026 lists the game as coming November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it makes no announcement about a photo mode, capture features, or sharing features. So this guide builds the plan on the tools that are confirmed today, the screenshot and clip systems built into both consoles. If a photo mode is announced later, it will be a bonus on top of a setup that already works.

Start with the button, not the photo mode rumour

Every launch moment a player will want to keep, the first drive, the first sunset over Leonida, the first disaster, will arrive without warning. Saving it will come down to one button press made from habit. Both consoles put that press in a different place, and both let the player decide in advance what the press does. Setting that decision now is the whole job.

PS5: set the Create button up on purpose

On PS5, pressing the Create button on the DualSense controller opens the create menu, with three capture routes: Take Screenshot, Start New Recording, and Save Recent Gameplay. PlayStation documents recording of up to 1 hour of gameplay, and Save Recent Gameplay can save anywhere from the last 15 seconds up to 1 hour, because recent gameplay is continuously and automatically recorded.

  1. Open Settings, Captures and Broadcasts, then Captures.
  2. Set the function of the Create button by choosing Standard, Easy Screenshots, or Easy Video Clips. Players who mostly grab stills should pick the layout that makes a screenshot the fastest action.
  3. Set the screenshot file type, and enable HDR for screenshots only while the console is connected to a compatible display, since PlayStation notes HDR is enabled only in that case.
  4. Set the video clip file type and resolution for recordings.
  5. Open Video Clip Format and decide whether to include microphone audio and voice chat audio. More on that choice below, because it involves other people.
  6. Open Auto-Captures, then Trophies, and set Save Trophy Screenshots, Save Trophy Videos, and Trophy Video Duration on purpose, rather than discovering a gallery full of automatic captures in launch week.

One caution belongs in this section, not in a footnote. PlayStation states that some content cannot be captured, and some scenes are blocked and will not be included in video clips. A missing clip on launch day may be a blocked scene, not a broken console.

Xbox: set Share and record what happened on purpose

Xbox Series controllers carry a dedicated Share button. By default, pressing it captures a screenshot and holding it captures a video. Without that button, pressing Guide then Y captures a screenshot, and Guide then X records what happened.

  1. Open Settings, Preferences, then Capture and Share. The same settings can be reached through Guide, Capture and Share, then Capture settings.
  2. Set Allow game captures to the intended choice, between captures by the player, captures by the player or games, and do not capture.
  3. Set Record what happened to a length that suits the player, from 15 seconds to several minutes, noting that available lengths differ by console and game.
  4. Set Automatically upload, Game clip resolution, and Capture location deliberately. Resolution and location decide both clip quality and how fast internal storage fills.
  5. To change what the Share button itself does, open Settings, Preferences, Capture and Share, then Button Mapping, and set press and hold to the actions used most.
  6. Find the results later through Guide, Capture and Share, Recent Captures, with Show All for the full list.

Quality, storage, and audio: decide before day one

Higher resolution clips and longer lookback windows cost storage, and launch week is the worst week to run out of it. Pick a sensible default now, a short lookback for everyday surprises and manual recording for planned moments, and clear old captures to external storage or delete the duplicates before November. The capture drill below will show roughly how much space the chosen settings use in practice, on the actual console, with no guessing.

Audio needs a human decision, not a technical one. PlayStation advises players to make sure it is alright with voice chat members before including their voice in video clips. Ask the regular party once, now, and set the microphone and voice chat inclusion to match the answer. A clip nobody can share because a friend never agreed to be recorded is a wasted clip.

Spoilers need the same care in the other direction. A screenshot shared in a group chat on launch night can hand a story moment to a friend who is two hours behind. Agree where launch captures go, and what stays private until the group catches up.

A two minute capture drill

  1. In any game already installed, take one screenshot using the fastest button route set above.
  2. Save one short clip of recent gameplay, then start and stop one manual recording.
  3. Find both files in the gallery or Recent Captures, and confirm they can be opened and shared from there.
  4. Check the storage screen and note how much space the test captures used.
  5. Delete the test files, so the first real gallery of launch week starts clean.

What success looks like: a screenshot takes one press with no menu hunting, a clip of the last minute can be saved without pausing the action, the files are easy to find afterwards, and the storage cost is known rather than feared. When those four things are true, launch moments can be kept with a thumb press, photo mode or no photo mode.
